Barbara W. (Parlin) Sawyer Machias Barbara W. (Parlin) Sawyer , 88, died July 23, 2016. She was born Dec. 18, 1927 in Machias to Ellis “Jim” and Anna (Brown)Parlin . Barbara graduated from Machias High School ,and Washington State Normal School . She taught elementary grades in Brewer , Oxford Hills , and Vernon , CT. She and her sister Norma continued on the family business , Parlin Gardens, started by Jim and Anna in the 1940's, and currently owned and operated by niece Rhonda Reynolds . Barbara was a gifted oil and acrylic artist, and enjoyed painting and arts and crafts activities her entire life . She was also a talented musician on piano and violin, and enjoyed singing in her earlier years. She enjoyed volunteering for many years with her good friend Lillian “Bunty” Gallant as activity coordinators at Marshall Manor, doing arts and crafts and many fun things with the residents. Barbara enjoyed many wonderful times at Bog Lake with family and friends, especially the pinochle games with longtime good friend Ann Chenery of Milo,ME She was predeceased by her former husband Richard M. Sawyer ; her sister and brother-in-law Norma and Fred Reynolds, and her former sister and brother-in-law Mary Jane and James Sawyer. She is survived by her daughter Ann Sawyer of Lucerne-in-Maine ; a sister Patricia Parlin of Zephryhills, FL ; former sister and brother-in-law Robert and Jane Sawyer of Ellsworth; and many nieces , nephews , and their families. Barbara will also be sadly missed by her beloved Kitty Sadie. Barbara was a lifetime member of the Centre St. Congregational Church in Machias . Her faith and love of the Lord and His church was steadfast. At Barbara's request , there will be no services. There will be a private graveside gathering for family. Those who wish may donate in Barbara's name to The Machias Food Pantry, 7 Center Street ,Machias ,ME 04654 or to a local animal shelter of your choice . The family is grateful to Community Health and Counseling Service Hospice Care, and to Dr. James Whalen for the caring support provided to Barbara.
