Jay - John P. Cornelio, 81, of Jay, Maine, passed away peacefully at his home on February 19th, surrounded by his family after fighting a courageous battle against cancer for the past year. He was born September 28, 1934 in Riley, Maine, to Bernadino and Alice (Angelo) Cornelio. John spent the majority of his life in Jay, growing up on his parents’ farm in Riley. On November 26, 1953 at St. Rose of Lima Church, he married Arlene Veilleux and for last 50 years they have made their home on Stone Street. John was a passionate man who had a love for life and many of its pleasures. His first passion was his work, and he was known to say, “What a great day to go to work. It’s a great thing to have a job!” John worked in the shoe industry for more than 46 years starting at Norrwock Shoe and ending his career in management for both Bass and Cole Haan. He spent nearly 20 years after he “retired” working as a delivery driver, maintenance person, and overall handyman for Turner Publishing Company. He loved working with wood and was involved in many renovation projects with his children. A giving man, he was always willing to help anyone that needed a hand. As a young man he enjoyed playing baseball and later in life enjoyed coaching his children’s teams. He also enjoyed watching his kids and grandkids play sports. His morning ritual of having a cup of coffee and talking with the boys at Riverside Kwik Stop always started his day on the right foot. He enjoyed hunting, watching the Red Sox, the Montreal Canadiens and the Dallas Cowboys. He loved playing cribbage and later in life enjoyed long rides, dining out with his wife, and watching the History Channel and game shows on television. John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Arlene of Jay, his son Steven of Scottsdale, Arizona; daughter Donna and her significant other Eugene of Farmington, Maine; son Ricky and his wife Claire of Alexandria, VA; Mark and his wife Kate of Auburn, Maine; and John and his wife Stephanie of Monument, Colorado. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers: Peter, James, and Thomas; and four sisters: Rosie, Angie, Louise (Dolly), and Gloria and her husband Richard, who was like a brother to John. He also leaves behind several close nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Ann-Marie, his parents and three siblings, sisters Mary and Millie Belskis and brother Louie.
