Harold Austin

Mr. Harold Austin, age 77, of the Old Grissom Creek Road section of Council, Virginia, passed away Sunday morning (November 9, 2014) at his home. Born February 2, 1937 in Buchanan County, Virginia, he was a son of the late Robert E. and Myrtle Austin. He had spent most of his life in the area and was of the Christian faith. He had served in the United States Army Medic Unit two years at different bases and was a member of the American Legion. He was a coal miner for thirty-seven years, having retired from Island Creek Coal Company and was a member of the UMWA. He was instrumental in the organization of the Council Volunteer Fire Department and remained a charter member until his death. He enjoyed deer hunting with his sons, was an avid gardener, and helping Mark with his construction equipment. He always looked forward to spending each Christmas with Rick and his family in Florida. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Maxwell Austin and Bobby Joe Austin; four sisters, infant, Juanita Austin, Maudeen Combs, Vilinie Hess and Lorene Taylor. Survivors include two sons, Rick Austin and wife, Mary of Ocala, Florida and Mark Austin and wife, Tammy of Council, Virginia; one grandson, Adrian Austin of Ocala, Florida; four brothers, Eugene Austin and wife, Trula, Donald Austin and wife, Betty and Carson Austin all of Council, Virginia and Billy Austin and wife, Bonnie of Drill, Virginia; three sisters, Betty Harris and husband, Russell and Catherin Johnson and husband, Earl both of Council, Virginia and Lynda Ball and husband, Doug of Honaker; a host of nieces, nephews, and friends also survive. The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Donna Breeding, Samantha Lane and all the staff of Home Nursing Company. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Tuesday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bennie Harris and Rev. Troy Harris officiating. Interment will follow in the Austin Cemetery at Venia, Virginia. Military Graveside Honors will be conducted. Pallbearers will be Elmer Ball, Ron Adkins, Bob Hale, Chris Harris, Dave Rasnake, Cody Owens, Earl Johnson and Adrian Austin. Honorary pallbearers will be William P. Harris, Ezra Harris, Keithel Breeding, Greg Dingus and Eddie Boyd. The family will receive friends at the Honaker Funeral Home after 6 PM Monday.
