Amen Hassen

<p>Amen Hassen, 83, of New Castle, passed away October 24, 2014 after an extended illness. </p><p><br></p><p>Born on November 4, 1930 in New Kensington, he was the son of the late Ismail and Khaldie Hassen. Hassen was preceded in death by his brothers Nabeeh and Mustapha Hassen, and his sister Minnie Hassen. </p><p><br></p><p>Hassen, a graduate of New Castle High School, attended Penn State University and Westminster College. He was a scholar athlete at Penn State University. He served our country during the Korean War in the US Army 82nd Airborne Division. He was recruited back to New Castle to begin his teaching career. His ambitions were to live in New Castle and teach. Hassen also coached for the New Castle Red Hurricanes under Lindy Lauro. </p><p><br></p><p>After 35 years as a school administrator, he retired and joined Howard Hanna Realty. Hassen enjoyed his community involvement, including the following professional and community activities: he was an executive member of the Islamic Society of New Castle, Legislative Chairman for Lawrence County Chapter of Pa. School Retirees, a member of the Lawrence County Historical Society, an active volunteer of the annual Chow Chow event for the Children’s Hospital, assisted with fundraising for the YMCA and served as a board member of Hosn Welfare Hospital and the Life Long Adult Literacy of Lawrence County. He was inducted into the Lawrence County Historical Society Sports Hall of Fame in April of 2010. Hassen was an avid golfer and enjoyed supporting the Penn State Nittany Lions, the New Castle Red Hurricanes and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He also enjoyed fishing and dancing. </p><p><br></p><p>He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Katherine “Honey” Hamett Hassen; his two sisters, Emily and Cecilia Hassen; his children Gary I. (Katy) and Jeffrey A. (Jodi) Hassen and Janine K. (Fred) Perrotta. He has six grandchildren Lauren, Bryan, Erica, Amanda, Anthony, and Leah. Spending time with his family and friends was his favorite pastime. </p><p><br></p><p>A special thanks to the staff at Rhodes Estates Alzheimer’s Facility and Jameson Hospice for their professional and compassionate care. </p><p><br></p><p>A private funeral service was held at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and was officiated by Dr. Ahmad Abul-Ela. </p><p><br></p><p>Interment is in Castleview Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Jameson Friends of Hospice.</p>
