Gilbert Collamore Obituary

Gilbert W. Collamore Sr., 83, passed away peacefully at the Woodlands Senior Living Center in Rockland, Maine with his loving family by his side. He was born on December 7, 1930 in Bremen, ME, the son of the late Elden and Emily (Wellman) Collamore. Growing up in Bremen, Gilbert attended local schools and was a graduate of Waldoboro High School with the class of 1951. After high school, Gilbert went on to technical college where he studied electronics before enlisting in the United States Army. During his time in the Army, Gilbert served during the Korean War, a feat he was very proud of. After returning home, Gilbert began his career as a commercial fisherman. He did it all, but the job he was most fond of was that of a lobsterman. Gilbert loved to be on the water and enjoyed putting in an honest day’s work. On June 14, 1958 he married the love of his life, Bessie Staples. The couple settled in Bremen and raised their family there. Gilbert loved being on the water and he fished into his 80’s, finishing his career working with his grandson CJ, helping to keep going a family tradition of fishing in which his son Clinton apprenticed under him and then CJ under his father Clinton. He had many boats throughout the years, but the two he was proudest of were the F/V Sea breeze and the F/V Bessie Day. The Bessie D. held a special place in Gilbert’s heart as it was built by hand with the help of his father Elden. Gilbert was also a whiz when it came to anything mechanical, a tradition that is still carried on by the Collamore family to this day. He could fix anything and was sought after by many to take a look at their junk cars. Gilbert enjoyed spending time in his gardens and also in the pastures with his cows. His cows were not ordinary. In fact, Gilbert did not use them for milk or their meat; he treated them more like house pets than livestock, even making sure that one of them had a proper burial after its passing. Gilbert loved a good family get together and always looked forward to the next one. He was selfless and was always giving of his time to various organizations in town. For Memorial Day he could be found in the local cemeteries helping to place flags at the graves of his fellow veterans. He also helped out at BEANO in order to help make sure the organizations he held dear were able to support themselves. He was a lifetime member and Past Commander of the SOULE-SHUMAN MEMORIAL VFW POST 4525 in Waldoboro; A 45 year member and also Past Commander of the Charles C. Lilly American Legion Post 149; a 40 plus year member of the Elks Lodge in Rockland where he was Exalted Ruler twice; A lifetime member of SAM Maine; A lifetime member of the NRA; served as selectman and road commissioner for the town of Bremen as well as serving a police chief for the town; A member of the lobster zone policy management Council; as well as serving in the position of Harbor Master. He will be greatly missed and remembered forever by anyone that knew and loved him.
