Eloise Strader Obituary

Eloise Correll Strader, 96, of Winchester, died Sunday, October 19, 2014, at her home. Miss Strader was born August 9, 1918 in Philippi, West Virginia; the daughter of the late Virgil R. Strader and Rachel Correll Strader. Eloise attended Mary Washington College where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in education. She taught mathematics at Handley High School for more than forty years and served as advisor to several senior classes. Eloise served as a director at Winchester Little Theatre, was a member of the Preservation of Historic Winchester, served as president of the Winchester-Frederick County Historical Society, and she proudly served with the Cedar Creek Battlefield Foundation. She also edited and reprinted a series of local historical books by Dr. Garland R. Quarles. Eloise also transcribed and edited the Civil War Journal of Mary Greenhow Lee a diary of her life in Winchester during the Civil War occupation. She is survived by six nieces, Margaret (Meg) Strader Papke (Wade) of Richmond, VA, Jody Strader Wall (Dan) of Winchester, Amy Strader Braithwaite of Winchester, Rachel Ann Strader LaPina (Ron) of Cranberry Township, PA, Debra Strader Fredley of Bellefonte, PA, and Sandra Strader Gregg of McMurray, PA; one nephew John A. Strader (Beth) of Richmond, VA; and many grandnieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by two brothers, Harry C. Strader “Buddy” and Virgil R. Strader Jr. and her longtime friend and companion Dorothy “Dot” Overcash. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 5-7 pm at Jones Funeral Home in Winchester. A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 24, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at the Jones Funeral Home Chapel in Winchester with Rev. Kirk Nave officiating. Burial will be at Mount Hebron Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dan Wall, Matthew Rhett Braithwaite Jr., Andrew Strader Braithwaite, John Armstrong Strader, James Wade Papke and Jim Pascal.
