Charles Wayne Fortier Obituary

Charles Wayne “Windy” Fortier, age 82 of Ludington passed away on Saturday October 18, 2014 at Oakview Medical Care Facility.


He was born on June 4, 1932 in Ludington, the 6th child of the late Frederick and Edna (Smith) Fortier. Charles graduated from St. Simon High School in 1950. After high school he joined the United States Army on January 26, 1951. He served during the Korean War, in the Army’s Airborne Regimental Combat Team and was wounded in action on July 27, 1953. Charles was the recipient of a Purple Heart and was honorably discharged on March 31, 1954.


Charles attended Davenport College, graduating with a degree in accounting. He worked for many years at the C&O Railroad. He was a member of St. Simon Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #76 in Ludington. Charles enjoyed hunting (especially telling about all the rabbits he shot) fishing, taking rides and his daily walks.


Charles is survived by his son, Dennis Fortier of Largo, FL; grandchildren, Hannah and Meyah Fortier; brother, Robert Fortier of Jacksonville, FL; sister, Rachel (Doug) Beadle of Ludington; and a large loving extended family.


He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Frederick, Edward, Harry and Howard; sisters, Barbara Flores and Marie “Susie” DeSota; and sister-in-laws, Ella Mae Fortier and Judy Fortier.


Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on July 24, 2015 at Oak Grove Funeral Home in Ludington. The family will receive guests one hour prior to services. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post 76 Honor Guard. Final interment will take place at Pere Marquette Catholic Cemetery in Ludington.


Dennis and Rachel would like to thank all the caring staff at Oakview for the patience and loving care that was given to Charles. Also a big thank you and hugs to Edie Hanshue and Tonya Hofman (great-niece) for all the extra attention given to him.
