Veronica Ward

Veronica (Morrison) Ward, 90, of Bateston, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully while being held by her family on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at the VON Sakura House Hospice in Woodstock, Ontario. Born in Bridgeport, Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, on April 24, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Alex McGillivary and Mary Catherine (Morrison) Reid. She was raised from birth by her maternal Grandparents Daniel W. and Margaret (McInnis) Morrison. She is survived by her children: Elroy MacDonald of Victoria, BC; Jeanette MacKinnon of Kitchener, ON; Arnold MacDonald, Sr. of Fort Nelson, BC; and Diane Colucci (Tony) of Woodstock, ON, with whom she resided for the last 4 years. She also raised 2 grandchildren as her own: Shawn MacDonald (Stephanie) of Calgary, AB and Arnold MacDonald, Jr. of Glace Bay, NS. She is also survived by her siblings: Catherine Burke of Glace Bay, NS; Wilma Fraser (Neil) of East Gwillimbury, ON; and Billy Reid (Carmel) of Glace Bay, NS. She has 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She also loved dearly a very special Brother-In-Law and Sister-In-Law, Bobby & Karen (Ward) MacLeod, currently of Sydney, NS, who took great care of her during her last years in Bateston. She was predeceased by her husband: Joseph N. Ward; her son: Blair MacDonald; her siblings: Archie Morrison; Mary Jane Farrell; Annie O’Rourke; Dan Morrison; Jessie Morrison; Jimmy Morrison; Margaret McIntosh; Winnie Holmes; Martha Burke; Susan Reid; Thomas Reid; Jeanette Banfield; and Brian Reid. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Main-A-Dieu, NS. She had a very strong faith in God and she believed strongly in the power of prayer as she practiced it multiple times daily. She loved music and it was a big part of her life. She took great pleasure cooking meals and no one ever left her house hungry. One of the fondest memories of home was of the smell (and taste) of her home made bread. She was happiest when surrounded by family and friends and especially her grandchildren. Most people knew her as “Granny” and all that knew her couldn’t help but love her. Her sense of humor was “unique” and she loved to make people laugh by surprising them, even shocking them, with things that she would say and do. A celebration of life will be held at Brock and Visser Funeral Home located at 845 Devonshire Avenue, (519-539-0004) in Woodstock, ON, on Sunday, October 19, 2014 at 4:00 PM. The funeral mass will be held at the Immaculate Conception Parish in Main-A-Dieu, NS within the next couple weeks (date and time to be announced). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VON Sakura House Hospice through the funeral home. Online condolences may be sent to www.brockandvisser.com
