Clem Pope Hood River, Oregon Obituary

Clem Pope

Clem Leroy Pope, 90, passed away Oct. 10, 2014, at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital in Hood River, Ore. Clem was born Oct. 14, 1923, to the late Margaret Coraine and Clem William Pope. Clem was a well-known figure in the Oregon logging and lumbering industry through the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s. Perhaps most significant in his career during that time was his role with Hult Lumber and Plywood of Horton and Junction City. Clem was a World War II veteran, trained as a paratrooper and serving with the OSS in China. Upon leaving the service he spent one year as a Forest Service smokejumper in Cave Junction, Ore. He finished his education as a forester with a bachelor’s degree from Purdue and a master’s degree from the University of Michigan. Clem married Phyllis Ann Lloyd in 1947 and together they had five children who survive him: Clem Lloyd Pope, Arthur Leroy Pope (Leslie), Ann Madelyn, Gale Kathryn (Carl Sheppard) and Lyn Margaret (Gary Lemon). Clem is also survived by five grandchildren: Clem Vance Pope (Sarah), Kathryn Lea Pope, Margaret Gene Pope, Pamela Jane (Jerod Woodworth) and Ann Kathryn (Kyle Marino), along with great-grandchildren Clem Owen, Ailah Olivia and Kole Michael, with three additional great-grandchildren now on the way. Clem was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis, and brother Richard, of Huntsville Ala. Clem passed in Hood River attended by family and friends, including Leahbeth Barnard, of Denver, his close friend and traveling companion of the last 10 years. At Clem’s request no public service will be held; the family will observe private ceremonies of remembrance with disposition of his ashes. Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson's Tribute Center (Funerals • Receptions • Cremations) 1401 Belmont Avenue, Hood River, Oregon 97031.
