Guy Mathews

Guy “Doc” Mathews, 62, passed away on October 6, 2014 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, NY. He was born on September 7, 1952 at Phelps Memorial Hospital to the late Walter Mathews and Letitia Blanche Mathews. He graduated from Sleepy Hollow High School and went on to receive a Bachelors in American History from SUNY Cortland in 1974 and a Masters in Guidance Counseling from Northeastern University in 1975. He worked at Lakeside U.F.S.D. until 1986 when he became a guidance counselor at White Plains High School. During his tenure, he cared for, encouraged and touched the lives of students, faculty and parents. He loved all sports and always could be found on the sidelines supporting his student athletes. His first love was ice hockey which he played as a child, in high school, college and as an adult. He coached all levels of ice hockey players at White Plains for over twenty years and also coached JV Girls Lacrosse. Guy Mathews leaves 3 sons: Jarrett Mathews of Nyack, NY; Ryan Mathews of Tarrytown, NY; and Ethan Mathews of Upper Nyack, NY; his 3 older sisters: Patricia Kyle Effort of Poughkeepsie, NY; Leslie Mathews of Denver, CO; and Bonnie Warren of Carrolton, TX, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, friends and relatives. In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund is being established in Guy’s name, and a memorial service will be scheduled for a later date.
