Katherine Matheny

Katherine Levon Matheny, 91, of Bridgeport, formerly of Shinnston, passed away at 9:20am, Saturday, September 27, 2014 at her residence. She was born in Confluence, PA, July 5, 1923 a daughter of the late Earl B. and Ethel Mae Parnell Miller. On January 13, 1995, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard L. Matheny, whom she married November 7, 1943. Surviving are one son, Richard L. Matheny, II and his wife Linda, Gaithersburg, MD; two daughters, Irma Bailey and her husband Dr. Gary Bailey, Hazelhurst, WI, Peggy Matish and her husband Judge James Matish, Bridgeport. She had eight grandchildren, Kevin Matheny and his wife Melissa, Yvonne Edgington and her husband Chris , Richard L. Matheny, III and his wife Lynn, Jeff Matheny, Stephen Bailey and his wife Kristin, Anne Bailey, Peggy Lee Wood and her husband Jason, and Jana Larson and her husband Ryan; twelve great-grandchildren; three half-sisters, Glenda Mae Toth, Shinnston, Vivian Heldreth, Wyatt, and Janice Heldreth, Wyatt; several nieces and nephews, and her special caregivers, Peggy Stout and Alice Loughery. She was also preceded in death by one son, Charles Eugene Matheny and three sisters, Merle M. Brasseur, Mary E. Wright, and Esther L. Wright. Mrs. Matheny was a homemaker and a long-time member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church in Shinnston. She enjoyed collecting dolls. The family would like to extend their special thanks to the staff of the Amedisys Hospice and the Maplewood Retirement Community. Katherine had resided at Maplewood for the past 12 years and truly appreciated all the support from her Maplewood friends, most especially her Maplewood neighbors, Helen Turnell and Mary Davisson. Friends may call at the Perine Funeral Home, 1348 S. Pike St., Shinnston, from 2-8pm, Thursday where funeral services will be held at 11am, Friday, October 3, with Rev. Chris Edgington officiating.
