Mavis Williams Obituary

Mavis Gale Williams, age 93, 2054 Highway 352, Flag Pond, passed away Thursday, September 18, 2014, in the Unicoi County Memorial Hospital. She was the daughter of the late James Anderson Shelton and Muncie Shelton. Mrs. Williams had lived most of her life in Unicoi County. She graduated from Asheville Normal Teachers College with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Mrs. Williams retired from the Unicoi County School System after teaching for nineteen years. Mrs. Williams taught at Sweetwater, Rocky Fork, Flag Pond and Temple Hill Schools. She was a former employee of Southern Pottery. Mrs. Williams was a gifted weaver and loved to teach weaving. She was a member of the Sweetwater Church of God. Other than her parents, Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by her husband, Bud J. Williams; five brothers and two sisters. Survivors include three sons, Collen Terry Williams, Flag Pond; Bud Williams, Jr., and wife, Teresa of Erwin; Broyate Williams, Sr., and wife, Darlene of Erwin; three daughters, Bobbie Jean Shelton, Flag Pond; Jacqueline Hale, Flag Pond and Judy Ayers and husband, Fred of Erwin. Twelve grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral service for Mrs. Williams will be held at 7:00 P. M. Saturday, September 20, 2014, from the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel. Pastors Craig Shelton and Noah Taylor will officiate. Music will be provided by the Sweetwater Singers. Pallbearers will be Chris Shelton, Chad Williams, Floyd Glenn Shelton, Roy Williams, Drew Williams, Austin Williams, Ryan Shelton and Brad Williams. The family will receive friends from 5:00 P. M. to 7:00 P. M. Saturday at the funeral home and other times at Mrs. Williams home 2054 Highway 352 Flag Pond. Committal service will be held at 2:00 P. M. Sunday in the Harris Cemetery, Flag Pond. Those wishing to attend are requested to assemble at the cemetery by 1:45 P. M. Sunday.
