Betty Jane Courtland, 92, of Scottville, died Friday morning September 12, 2014, at Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital. She was born on December 4, 1921, in Bowling Green, Ohio, the daughter of the late Charles and Bessie (Mendenhall) Riffle. She married William E. Courtland on December 21, 1942, at the home of the Reverend Stewart on Round Lake. Betty farmed along with her husband and had also worked at Star Watch Case. They were well known for their large produce garden and self-serve market at their home. She is survived by her husband, William E. Courtland of Scottville; two children, Roger (Diane) Courtland of Ludington and Kristie (Kevin) Willick of Scottville; grandchildren, Jay, Kellie, and Todd (Jennifer) Courtland and Mackenzie and Conner Willick; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Also surviving are her siblings, Beatrice P. Riffle of Ludington, Charles Riffle and Curtis (Ruthie) Riffle of Custer, and Corrine (Joe) Lavas of Fountain; as well as by numerous nieces; and nephews. She was also preceded in death by siblings, Thelma Stark, Beulah Marrison, Russell Riffle, Thurman Riffle, Glendora Ray, Marguerite Renwick, Roger Riffle, H.B.”Bud” Riffle, and Nina Riffle. Services for Betty Jane Courtland will be at a later date, with final interment in the Sugar Grove Cemetery. Memorials in Betty’s name may be directed the Alzheimer’s Association.
