Melvin Neil Watts, Sr., 85, of Hummelstown, passed away Wednesday, September 10, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Granville on February 18, 1929, he was the son of the late Daniel and Eleanor Fisher Watts. A self-employed mason, Melvin retired after 48 years of service from Melvin N. Watts Masonry Contractor. Prior to starting his own business Melvin had completed a masonry apprenticeship at Bethlehem Steel. He was an U.S. Navy veteran who served on the U.S.S. Missouri. Melvin was a member of the Linglestown Church of God. He was also a member of the Cleon Cassel Coffee Club; and was a former member of the Lower Dauphin Football and Wrestling Booster Clubs. Melvin was an avid farmer with his Poland China pigs, and enjoyed throwing pig roasts and parties. One of his favorite things to do was go fishing, a hobby he loved to teach to others especially the Life Skills Class at Lower Dauphin High School at their annual Fishing Derby. Melvin also enjoyed hunting and gardening. Most important to Melvin, however, was spending time with his family enjoying special moments with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of almost 62 years, Ethel F. Ulsh Watts, whom he married on September 13, 1952; two daughters, Wenda Harman wife of Ken, and Connie Barto wife of Steve both of Hummelstown; three sons, Melvin Watts, Jr. husband of Lisa, and Mark Watts both of Hummelstown, and Jeff Watts husband of the late Tina Prescott Watts of Campbelltown; three sisters, Betty Ann Martin wife of Joe of Manheim, Rose Kemberling wife of Earl of Austin, TX, and Sharon Engle wife of the late Jerry Engle of Marietta; 13 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by a son, Bryan Scott Watts, on September 23, 2013; two sisters, Nada Navratil and Vivian Ware; and two brothers, Nelson Watts and Bob Watts. A celebration of Melvin’s life will be held Monday, September 15, 2014, at 11 AM in the Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown, with The Rev. G. Barry Stahl, his pastor, officiating. Inurnment with military honors will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Friends are invited to visit with the family Monday in the funeral home from 10 AM until time of the service. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made to AseraCare Hospice, 75 South Houcks Road, Suite 101, Harrisburg, PA 17109; or to the American Heart/Stroke Association, Capital Region, 1019 Mumma Road, Wormleysburg, PA 17043.
