John Codino Obituary

John Adolph Codino of Hood River, Oregon passed away on Friday, August 29, 2014 at Hood River Care Center, Hood River, Oregon surrounded by those who loved him. He was 83 years of age. John was born December 30, 1930 in Portland, Oregon to Anthony and Evelyn (Favro) Codino. John attended Whitaker Elementary School in Portland, Oregon and graduated from Benson High School in Portland, Oregon. John married Elva Eileen, and for many years John was a news reporter and disc jockey with KIHR Radio Station in Hood River, Oregon. John Codino was a 50+ year member of the Oregon and Washington Officials Association, working football, basketball, baseball and softball, on all levels of play. He served 25 years as the Commissioner of Umpires for the Mid-Columbia, but always felt his greatest contributions were to little league baseball. He was one of the few Little League Umpires in the area to work a Little League World Series, working the inaugural Softball World Series, at Alpenrose Dairy, where it is still held today. John was a legendary fishermen and hunter. Fish feared him, and deer smiled at him. Volumes would be needed to outline his exploits! John was a former member of BPOE #1507, and a 50+ year member of the Hood River Lions Club. His 10 years of performances in the Lion’s Follies, were gut wrenching, yet to John, near Academy Awards caliber. He also served as District Governor for District 36, 2003-2004, which comprised all of eastern Oregon. John made thousands of friends throughout his life. He always had a smile and a joke for everyone, as he truly cared about people. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. John is survived by brother Leo Codino of Portland, Oregon; stepsons Michael J. Wollam of Portland, Oregon, John F. Wollam of Vancouver, Washington, Matthew T. Wollam of Denver, Colorado; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his father Antony Codino and mother Evelyn Codino. Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 4th, 2014 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1501 Belmont Ave, Hood River, Oregon 97031 with reception following.
