Dorothy Mae Erdman, 95, of Manistee, MI died Monday evening August 18, 2014 at Green Acres Retirement Living of Manistee. She was born May 20, 1919 in Detroit, MI the daughter of the late Roscoe and Francena (Cole) Cushing. She was a graduate of Bear Lake High School Class of 1938. She married Richard Louis Erdman on October 18, 1941at the Parsonage of the Onekama Church of the Brethren; he preceded her in death on September 30, 1986. From a very young age, Dorothy was an intensive caregiver for many in her family, serving them with love and compassion. Dorothy was one of the first employees of Richmond Drug in Bear Lake back when they had a soda fountain and talked about the “bad boys” in town who would spin the tops off the stools at the counter. She was a part-time employee of Smeltzer Packing and a hard worker on the family farm. She also was a writer for the Bear Lake Beacon. Dorothy loved to dance at Maccabee Hall in Bear Lake and sing in school plays and other groups, including the Manistee Sweet Adelines. She had a beautiful soprano voice even into her 80’s. Dorothy attended the Bear Lake Methodist Church and was a member of the West Michigan Emmaus community. After the death of her husband, Dorothy enjoyed traveling with Bob Allen Tours of Manistee, and also visited many states and countries with daughter Sandy and other friends. Dorothy is survived by her children and their spouses: daughter, Barbara Peterson of Florida; sons, Douglas and Jacque Erdman of Bear Lake, Greg and Debbie Erdman of Manistee; son-in-law, Richard Hansen of Grandville, MI; nine grandchildren, Rick (Amy) Hansen, Beth Hansen (Alexis Barthelay), Kristi (Ben) Agnew, Michelle (John) Mertes, Laurie (Brian) Cook, Tracy (Ben) Schuette, Eric Erdman, Cindy Pruyne and Ryan (Jozie) Erdman. She is also survived by 23 great-grandchildren, one brother, Richard (Donna) Cushing of Arizona and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Sandra Hansen; son-in-law, Roy Peterson; and two brothers, Raymond and Warren Cushing. Cremation has taken place and memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 22, 2014 at Oak Grove Funeral Home in Manistee & Cremation Center. The family will receive guests beginning at noon. Memorial contributions in Dorothy’s name may be directed to the Ramsdell Theatre in Manistee or the John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids.
