Betty Roberts Obituary

Betty J. (White) Roberts, 92, of Decatur died on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Center. She was born in Decatur, IN on July 12, 1922. Her parents were Homer L. and Nellie Ethyln (Myers) White, both deceased. As a young girl, she along with her mother and sisters moved to her grandparent’s farm in Blue Creek Township. She had so many remembrances of life growing up with the special love of her grandparents, Josiah and Rosie Myers. She graduated high school from Monroe, Indiana and went on to Dayton, Ohio where she received a degree from Business School. She married Rev. Charles Ellsworth Roberts in 1947 and they pastored and travelled doing evangelism until returning to Decatur in 1954. He passed away in 1969. Over her years living in Decatur she worked for the Shaffer Wholesale Company, the Wayne Novelty Company and most recently the Decatur Public Library. Betty loved gospel music; she was a musician and over the years sang solos, participated in choirs, played piano and organ, most recently for her home church, Union Chapel United Methodist. She is survived by her son, William Ellsworth Roberts and son-in-law Joseph A. Flores of Portland, Oregon, her grandsons William and Brent (Vanessa) Roberts, her great-grandsons, Blake and Spencer and a great-granddaughter Brittany all of the Dayton, Ohio area. She is also survived by her step-son, Charles (Cindy) Roberts of Ft. Wayne, IN, her step-daughter-in-law, Enid Ripley Roberts of Columbus, IN and a step-granddaughter Joyce (Eric) Black of Ft. Wayne, IN. Of her four siblings her youngest sister, Berdetta Jo Daniels of Huntington survives. Barbara Rose Leistner, Cleora Eileen Daniels and Beverly Sue Stetler are deceased. She loved spending time with and talking long distance if necessary to her multitude of nieces and nephews. Betty loved her life, full of activity, family and friendships. She always appreciated the kindness and generosity of every person she came in contact with, her Bible study-prayer groups, her co-workers at the library, her friends Tony and Ruth who did so much for her. Mom, Grandma, Sister, Aunt, Friend…Betty will be missed. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2014 at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2014 also at the funeral home. Pastor Ed Karges will be officiating. Burial will be in Little Auglaize Cemetery, Melrose, OH. Memorials are to Union Chapel UMC or Van Wert Inpatient Hospice.
