James Schultz

James E. “Barney” Schultz, 67, of Decatur died Friday, July 18, 2014 at Adams Memorial Hospital. Jim was born on October 3, 1946 in Decatur, IN to the late Leo F. and Cordelia (Worthman) Schultz. On October 19, 1968 he married Bonnie Jean Girard. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Msgr. J.J. Seimetz Council 864, where he served as Past Grand Knight. He served as the President of the Maintenance Committee for St. Mary’s Catholic Church and St. Joseph Catholic School where he retired from after 37 years of service. Due to his love and dedication for children he served as the Athletic Director for 16 years at St. Joseph Catholic School. Barney was part owner and operator of the family businesses, which first included the 3 plants of Decatur Ready Mix which were also in Portland and Winchester and then Baker & Schultz Bridge Construction, where he served as Head Mechanic. After retiring from the family business he became the Mechanic for the City of Decatur. He coached for decades within the Decatur Little Leagues and for 10 years he served as President of all Decatur Baseball Youth Leagues. He served his community in the first group of the Decatur Police Reserves. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge for 47 years. Survivors include his wife of 45 years Bonnie J. Schultz; 2 sons Scott (Cami) Schultz and Luke Schultz all of Decatur; 6 grandchildren Madison, Audrey, Alex, Andria, Nathan and Nicholas Schultz; 4 brothers, John (Brenda) Schultz, Tom (Sandy) Schultz, Fred (Ann) Schultz and Bill (Kellie) Schultz all of Decatur; 4 sisters, Gerri Matheny of Dade City, FL, Mary (Danny) French, Jane (Mike) Beery and Joyce Schultz all of Decatur. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers David and Mike Schultz, niece Jennifer Beery and nephew Eryk Heck. Visitation will be from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Monday, July 21, 2014 at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home with a reciting of the Holy Rosary at 1:15 p.m. The K of C 4th Degree Honor Guard will post from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church with Fr. David Voors, Fr. Philip DeVolder, and Fr. Stephen Colchin concelebrating. Burial will take place in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic School Athletic Dept. or to Decatur Baseball League.
