H. M. "Pete" Chitwood, age 99, 416 Union Street, Erwin, passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2014, in the Center on Aging, Erwin. Mr. Chitwood was a lifelong resident of Erwin and son of the late Harvey Milton and Chevis Davis Chitwood. He retired as locomotive engineer for Clinchfield Railroad in 1977, after thirty-five years of service. Mr. Chitwood was a former employee of Blue Ridge Pottery. He was a member of the First Christian Church and had received a fifteen years perfect attendance pin. Mr. Chitwood was a fifty plus years member of the Centennial Lodge #491 F&AM, a Shriner, and a 33 Degree Mason. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Tucker Chitwood in 2002; two sons, Gary Chitwood and Harvey Chitwood; two daughters, Patsy Chitwood and Elaine Meeker. Mr. Chitwood is survived by one daughter, Marsha Edwards and husband, Robert, of Unicoi; three grandchildren, Mike Edwards and wife, Stephanie, Amy Edwards, all of Unicoi and Joseph White of Crawfordsville, Florida; one great grandchild, Ashleigh Edwards; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral service for Mr. Chitwood will be held at 2:00 P. M. Friday, July 11, 2014 from the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. William Gwaltney will officiate. Music will be provided by Inez Chandler. Pallbearers will be selected from members of First Christian Church. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the funeral service. Masonic Graveside Service will follow in Evergreen Cemetery with Carlyle Love of the Centennial Lodge #491 presiding.
