Joan Marple

Joan Ellen Marple, 76, passed away peacefully at Maine General Hospital on July 2, 2014. She was born in Chicago on July 31, 1937 to Howard and Mary (Demms) Marple. She was raised in Webster Groves, MO where she graduated from Webster Groves High School in 1955. She went on to Coe College Nursing Program in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, graduating with an RN degree. She worked in a VA Hospital in Iowa, but soon moved to Waldoboro, ME to care for her ailing father. She later worked for Damariscotta Hospital in Maine in the 1960's including some time as head nurse. She also cared for her failing mother in this period. After her parents died, she did some private nursing for elders in town. Soon she branched out and sold baked goods from her kitchen and even participated in the distribution of shrimp from her home. She loved all sporting events and concentrated on them in her retirement. Joan was predeceased by her parents Mary and Howard Marple, her brother David Earl Marple and a niece Katherine Irene Marple Ortiz. She is survived by her sister-in-law Barbara Marple Walker, two nephews Keith Allen and Kenneth Howard Marple, several great nieces and nephews and four cousins. A graveside service will be held at a later date to be determined by the family.
