Gordon Winters Obituary

Gordon Reginald Winters, age 89, of Lunenburg, passed away quietly on Friday, June 27 2014 at the South Shore Reginald Hospital in Bridgewater. Born in Bridgewater on December 23, 1924, he is one of four siblings of the late Joshua and Carrie (Hirtle) Winters. A tireless worker, he was an accomplished stone mason for many years, working with his father-in-law, the late Wallace Daniels around the South Shore area. In his later years he also worked in building maintenance for National Sea Products, Lunenburg. He was a past member of the Orange Lodge of Lunenburg and was a Lifetime member of the Lunenburg Fire Department, having served for more than 35 years. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, whether alongside a peaceful lake or stream or sitting on the frozen surface of the Lunenburg harbour. Frequently he could be seen playing any musical instrument put in front of him and was a member of Lunenburg’s Cross Island Hillbillies for many years. Gordon will be sadly missed by his wife of 68 years Ruth (Daniels) Winters, his two sons Terry (Penny) Winters, Ottawa and Bruce (Tanya) Winters, Lunenburg; daughter Deborah (Jimmy) Veinotte, Blockhouse; and sister Evelyn Feener, Upper Branch. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. His was predeceased by brothers Stephen and Oris. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny funeral Home, Lunenburg. A service to celebrate Gordon’s life will be held in St John’s Anglican Church Lunenburg on Wednesday, at 2:00 pm with Archdeacon Michael Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St John’s Anglican Church or the Salvation Army. www.sweenyfuneralhome.ca
