Dr. Alexander Lea (Sandy) Steeves, 69, of Martin's Brook, Lunenburg County, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at home surrounded by his family. Born in Montreal, son of the late Katherine and Dr. Lea Steeves. Loved and missed by his wife, JoAnn, children, Laura Steeves, Dr. Jennifer (John) Steeves and Scott (Susan) Steeves. Grandchildren, Megan Cross (Jennifer), Liam and Lily Steeves (Scott) and brothers, Dr. Donald (Alma), Gordon (Bonnie), Dr. John (Sandra) and Jamie. Uncle to Laina, Cheryl, Paul, Carol, David, Mark, Michael, Katharine, Lauren, Hannah, Heather, Karlyn, Aaron and their families, sister in-law, Kathy Halfacker. Sandy retired in 2011, a recognized, dedicated and compassionate Physician of 40 plus years caring for thousands of patients. Awarded Rural Physician of the Year from Doctors of Nova Scotia. He was a Champion for a better health care system, founding medical director of Fishermen's Memorial Veteran's Unit as well as numerous leadership positions on the Medical Staff. When Sandy began his practice, Dr. David Keddy advised: "Look after your patients well and they will look after you". So he did. And they did. His patients were always in his thoughts and close to his heart. Beaver, Cub and Scout Leader, President and leader for multiple Clubs and Societies. Sandy enjoyed his farm, the outdoors, Fly (spey) fishing, music, photography, woodworking, wine making, breeding and raising horses, dogs and chickens. Sandy had a strong sense of responsibility. He believed in fairness, truth, always aiding those in need and protecting those in trouble. He lived life with kindness, generosity and patience. He was a role model and idol to his family who will be forever at a loss. The family is deeply indebted to the kindness, attention and support of: Dr. David Abriel and Palliative care nurses, Nolene and Bonnie; VON nurses-Shelly, Andrea, Lynn, Colleen, Melanie, Nadine, Wanda and Kathy; and Kinburn Pharmacy staff- Martha, Marlene, Trinda, Dawn, Susan, Bev, Judy and Cathy. An extra special Thank you to Trishe Purvis and Jean Turple for their selfless commitment. Dr. McAuley, Dr. Robertson and the SSRH Chemo Unit and Dr. Laurie McNeil. Memorial Service to celebrate Sandy's life will be held, Saturday, June 7, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lunenburg, Rev. Willis Ott, officiating. Reception to follow at the Lunenburg Fire Department. Memorial donations in Sandy's memory may be made to the Lunenburg County VON, Lunenburg County Palliative Care or to the Mahone Islands Conservancy Association.
