Dr. John Osmond Obituary

John David Osmond (17 June, 1930 - 15 April, 2014) The family of John Osmond wish to announce, with great sadness, the loss of a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He passed on at home in the presence of his family after a long battle with Leukemia. He leaves to mourn his wife Gill, his son Kevin, daughter-in-law Helma, his daughter Claire-Louise, son-in-law Oliver and his grandchildren Meg and Eli to whom he was a very special Grumpie. He is survived by his brother Eric, sister-in-law Jean and many members of his extended family around the world. John spent his formative years in South Africa. He graduated from Grey College in Port Elizabeth and received a full bursary to attend the University of Cape Town Medical School. He then proceeded to study and complete the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in the UK, going on to specialize in Orthopaedics. On his return to South Africa, he was the Associate Professor and Head of Orthopaedics at Natal University, at the same time running a private medical practice with a special interest in spinal surgery. In 1987, Gill and John made the difficult decision to leave their family and friends to settle in Canada. John spent many years running the Orthopaedic Department in Gander, NF, before he and Gill retired to Lunenburg in 1996. John will be remembered for his love of family; his passion for his profession and the Latin language; his golf, rugby and the great outdoors; his colourful tales and his wonderful sense of the ridiculous. John was a man of honour and compassion and in his last months handled his illness with courage and grace. The family are most grateful to Dr. Catherine Kelly for her constant care, to Ellen Hunt for her loving presence, to father Michael Mitchell for his spiritual guidance, for the dedication of the nurses of VON and Palliative Care, and to Home Care who offered respite support. Gill and John were never without love and care from their Lunenburg friends. The service will be at the St John's Anglican Church in Lunenburg at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 26. If so desired, donations in John’s memory may be made to Lunenburg County Victoria Order of Nurses, Palliative Care or to a charity of your choice. www.sweenyfuneralhome.ca
