HARTFORD Gilman “Burt” Thompson, 90, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at his home with his loving family by his side. Born May 4, 1923, in Rensselaer, NY, he was the son of the late Herbert and Hazel (Kerr) Thompson. Burt proudly served as a radio operator in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He saw action in New Guinea, Ryukyu Islands, and the Philippines. Burt received the American Service Medal, a World War II Victory Medal, and a Purple Heart. After his dedicated service to our country, Burt returned home and married the love of his life, Christine Sheldon in the Hartford Methodist Church on May 9, 1948. The Thompsons remained in Hartford and raised their family of three girls as well as owning Thompson’s IGA. Burt was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church of North Granville and served as the song leader for many years. He was also a member of the American Legion. As well as his participation in many church activities, Burt enjoyed watching baseball, growing his vegetable garden every spring, and reading. He was also a lifelong NY Giants fan. In addition to his parents, Burt was predeceased by his granddaughter, Susanna Hamilton, and seven brothers and sisters. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 66 years, Christine Thompson of Hartford, his daughters; Linda Tatko and her husband Paul of Conroe, TX, Faye Smith and her husband Robert of Lynchburg, VA, and Pat Hamilton and her husband Glen of Cropseyville, NY, 12 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 1-3pm on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at the Calvary Baptist Church of North Granville, corner of Route 22 and Route 40, North Granville, NY. A funeral service will follow calling hours at 3pm at the church, officiated by Pastor Randy McKee and Pastor Glen Hamilton. Arrangements are under the care of the M.B. Burial will be conducted at 10:00am on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the Morningside Cemetery, Hartford.
