Funeral services for Yolanda Acosta, 58, of Portales, will be held at 10:00 AM, Sat., Jan. 25, 2014 at the First Baptist Church with Dr. David McFadden officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Noel Nunez, Danny Nunez, Donnie Nunez, Anthony Loya, Tony Mirabal and Jorge Vargas serving as pallbearers. All of her great-nieces and nephews along with her other family members and many friends will serve as honorary pallbearers. The Rosary will be recited on Friday evening, Jan. 24, 2014 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel.
Yolanda Acosta was born April 22, 1955 in Brownfield, TX to the home of Conchita and Juan B. Acosta and died Jan. 21, 2014 in Clovis, NM. The Acosta family moved to Elida when Yolanda was a young girl, and she graduated from Elida High School in 1973. In June 1974 she was married to Leo Montoya. The couple had two children before divorcing. In Oct. of 1996, she was married to Ralph Villegas. Mr. Villegas passed away in 1998, as the result of an accident.
For several years she was employed at Bank of New Mexico in Portales. In 1986, Yolanda moved to Santa Fe where she worked in the Governor's office as a secretary. In 1988, Ms Acosta moved to Albuquerque, where she was employed by the Department of Labor as a job placement representative. She retired in Nov. of 2013 due to health conditions.
Yolanda was very active in the Republican Party in New Mexico, and served as president of the Portales Republican Women. In 1984, she was invited to President Reagan's Inaugural Ball. She also served as president of Portales Right To Life. She enjoyed singing, entertaining and organizing political rallies
A very important part of her life during the last several years was writing. She was the author of a book telling her family story and history entitled Acosta. It tells much about who each one of her family members are and how they came to be who they are. She especially tells the story of her beloved brother, Oscar, who was a major league baseball player with the New York Yankees.
She is survived by her son, Brandon Montoya of Portales; a daughter, Leah Montoya and her partner, Viviana Holguin of Roswell; three grandchildren, Talina and Taji Holguin and Josiah Montoya; her mother, Conchita Acosta of Portales; a brother, Juan Acosta, Jr. of Juarez, Mexico; a sister, Carol Acosta Flores of Portales; and her sister-in-God, Sandra Mirabal of Albuquerque. She was preceded in death by her father, Juan Acosta in 1986, a brother, Oscar Acosta in 2006 and two nieces, Kimberly Aragon-Nunez and Danisten Fay Nunez.
