George Munroe Obituary

George Angus Munroe, 77, born on October 21st, 1936 of Lunenburg, passed from Parkinson’s on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Percy and Rita (Selig) Munroe. George was an avid historian and for many years worked for National Historic Sites. He also worked in University Administration at Acadia and St. Mary’s universities. His most rewarding work was with the Youth Support Programme, which he founded to help adolescents with addiction problems. Over a period of ten years he worked with over eleven hundred young people in Lunenburg and Queens Counties and was awarded the Canada 125 Medal for his work with addicted adolescents. While at Dalhousie he was the co-chairman of the committee which built the students union building. George was awarded the Dalhousie Gold D, was one of the founders of the Drama Workshop and directed many plays and musicals. An active yachtsman, he was a past commodore of the St. Margaret’s Sailing Club. George was also active in the Anglican Church having served as Warden at St. George’s Anglican Church in Halifax, serving on many diocesan committees and more recently as chairman of the heritage committee of St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg. He is survived by his brother, Robert (Wendy) Munroe and niece, Heather. He is also survived by a special cousin Peter Selig and his children. He was predeceased by his nephew, Robert Percy. Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213, Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg. A memorial service to celebrate George’s life will be held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg, Archdeacon Michael Mitchell officiating. Interment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Society Maritime Region.
