Reid Tanner Obituary

It is with deep sadness that the family of the late Reid Morton Tanner, 65, of Blue Rocks, announce his passing on Monday, July 8, 2013 at the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Blue Rocks, he was the son of the late Allan and Annis (Crossland) Tanner. Reid loved the sea and made his first trip on the “Nancy Eileen” at age 16. He went scalloping with Capt. David Winters on the “Flora and Jane”; Capt. Vernon Conrad on the “Annette Marie”; Capt. Victor Morash on the “Sharon Dawn II” and Capt. Ralph Church on the “Robert and Joyce”. He went fish dragging with Capt. Percy Morash. He was cook with Capt. Clayton Strickland on the “Pick O Sea”. In 1988 he was forced to retire from deep sea fishing due to back problems. He continued to follow the sea every chance he got and as his health allowed. He had a small boat of his own and went lobstering with friends. Reid’s other passion was hunting deer. He also carved some very nice duck decoys. The last few years, his pastimes have been feeding the deer, doing jigsaw puzzles and driving to Blue Rocks to see the deer and his mother. Last summer, he finally got another boat and enjoyed many evenings of mackerel fishing, sharing his catch with his neighbours and friends. Reid is survived by Judy Tanner, his former companion and her children Patty Gomm and Donna Jack; sisters, Patsy (Roch Hannam), Nfld; Doris (Everett Mason), Blue Rocks; Linda (Charles Oickle), Italy Cross; and Susan, Mahone Bay, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, Reid was predeceased by brothers, Carl and Gary and nephews, Jackie Hannam and John Gallant. Friends are invited to share their memories of Reid with his family during visitation at the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg, on Tuesday, July 9, from 7:00pm – 9:00 pm. A Funeral Service to celebrate Reid’s life will be held at St. Barnabas Anglican Church, Blue Rocks, on Wednesday, July 10, at 2:00, the Archdeacon Michael Mitchell officiating. Interment will be in the Upper Blue Rocks Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Barnabas Anglican Church, the Upper Blue Rocks Cemetery or to the Canadian Cancer Society.
