Obituary:

Mary Pat Steptoe of Clarksburg died at her home surrounded by her family, on Saturday, March 19th following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Martinsburg, WV on February 8th, 1944, Mary Pat’s father was the late Robert W. Thompson and her mother was the late Anne Elizabeth Lucas Thompson. Following her father’s 1949 death, her mother married Allen R. Emmert, Jr., who was a loving and caring stepfather for many years.

After graduating from Martinsburg High School in 1962, Mary Pat completed her undergraduate studies in English at West Virginia University. A member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, where she developed wonderful and lasting friendships, Mary Pat was active in many other undergraduate organizations.

In February 1966, Mary Pat married Robert M. Steptoe, Jr. also of Martinsburg. After completing a tour of duty in the United States Navy, Bob enrolled in law school and Mary Pat enrolled in graduate school at WVU. In 1970 Mary Pat was awarded a Master’s Degree in Speech and Communication.

After living in Washington D.C. for several years, Mary Pat and Bob settled in the Clarksburg area, where they have resided since 1972.

Mary Pat is survived by her husband Bob of Clarksburg, as well as their four children and spouses: Rob and Andrea Steptoe of Morgantown; Kate and Nate Fisher of Columbus, OH; Elizabeth and Matthew Smailes of Morgantown; and Anne Pendleton Steptoe of Morgantown. She is also survived by her brother Allen R. Emmert, III, his wife Nancy, and their daughter Jennifer, all of Martinsburg, WV.

Mary Pat was a beloved grandmother. Her grandchildren are Robert Mason Steptoe, IV, Charles Hastings Steptoe, and Miles Thompson Steptoe of Morgantown, as well as David Blake Fisher, Lillian Sarah Fisher, and Marshall Steptoe Fisher of Columbus, OH.

Active in the Harrison County community, Mary Pat contributed in many ways. She was a member of The Tuesday Club; the Clarksburg-Harrison Public Library; Harrison County Landmarks Commission; Goff Plaza Garden Club, Waldemore Association; Christ Episcopal Church; Oral Lake Fishing Club; Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority; the Clarksburg Country Club; and the West Virginia Women’s Commission.

Possessed of a gentle and giving personality, Mary Pat leaves many friends in the community, young and old. Always a good listener, Mary Pat provided sound advice to many young men and women and especially her six God-children, who often looked to her for guidance and support.

Visitation will take place at Davis Funeral Home, 1 Olen Thomas Drive, Clarksburg, WV, on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, from 3-6 PM and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, South Sixth and Main Street, Clarksburg, on Thursday, March 24, 2011, at 11:30 AM. A reception will follow at the Parish House. A visitation will also be held at Brown Funeral Home, 327 West King Street, Martinsburg, on Thursday evening, March 24, 2011, from 6-8 PM. The internment service will take place at the Tuscarora Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 2335 Tuscarora Pike, Martinsburg, on Friday, March 25, 2011.
