Robert James "Stump" Groff

Robert James “Stump” Groff, 87, of West Rockhill Township, formerly of Telford, passed away peacefully at home on Friday morning, August 10, 2007. He was the beloved husband of Gertrude “Dolly” L. (Dorn) Groff, to whom he was married for 54 years. Born and raised in Perkasie, he was a son of the late William and Rowena (Hartman) Groff. During his youth he was the leader of the “4th Street Gang.” Stump was a U.S. Army combat veteran, having served in the Pacific Theater from 1941 - 1945 in Company L, 63rd Infantry, 6th Division during World War II. He was the recipient of two Bronze Stars and one Bronze Arrowhead. Prior to World War II, he was employed at the former Freed’s Glass Factory, Perkasie. After the war, he was self-employed with a butter and egg route in Philadelphia for many years. Later, he was a security guard with the former Todd Motors, Souderton. He was a life member of the following organizations: Nase-Kraft American Legion Post 255 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Forrest Lodge 245, both of Sellersville; North Penn Gun Club, Trumbauersville; Morwood Sportsmen’s Club, Tylersport; Keelersville Club, Bedminster; and the Civil Air Patrol. He attended Calvary Baptist Church, Lansdale. A licensed pilot, Stump loved flying his own plane. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles and farming. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his five children: Robert Scott Groff, Telford; Robin J. Groff, Quakertown; Yvonne Beaber and her husband, Craig, Omaha, Nebraska; Tammy Matczak, Tylersport; Kelly J. Groff and his wife, Cindy, Sellersville; six grandchildren: M. Andrew, Breanna, Elliot, Brandon, David, and Joshua; three brothers: Theodore Groff and his wife, Verna, Perkasie; Lincoln Groff, Sellersville; Raymond Groff and his wife, Jean, Sellersville; two sisters: Jane Trumbauer and her husband, Floyd, Quakertown; and Mary Kooker and her husband, Donald, Perkasie. He was preceded in death by a brother, William Groff, and Stump’s beloved dog, “Honey.” His Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, August 15 at 11:00 AM in Calvary Baptist Church, 1380 South Valley Forge Road, Lansdale, PA 19446. Family and friends may call at the church Wednesday morning from 10:00 AM until time of service. Interment will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Perkasie. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church at the address above or to Grand View Hospice, 700 Lawn Avenue, Sellersville, PA 18960.
