Mike Chavis, Jr., 87, of East Palatka, passed away, Monday, April 23, 2012 at home following an extended illness. A native of Glenwood, Georgia, he resided in Putnam County since 2001 coming from Melbourne, Florida. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Mike retired from the Army as a Master Sgt after 23 years of service. After retiring from the Army, Mike taught high school for a total of 15 years in Hilton Head, SC and in Lancaster, PA. He was a member of College Road Church of Christ, the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) and the VFW. Mike had also been a Mason and Shriner. In his spare time, Mike loved to fish and golf.
He is survived by his wife of 8 years, Retta A. Chavis of East Palatka, 2 sons, Michael J. Chavis and wife Jane of Bowling Green, KY and Mitchell F. Chavis and wife Anna of Tigard, OR, a daughter, Scherry Cusic and husband Patrick of Bel Air, MD, 4 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 3:00 P.M. Thursday, April 26, 2012 at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Palatka with Bro. C.L. Overturf, Jr. officiating. Burial with full military honors by the U.S. Army will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 2:00 P.M. till the time of services at 3:00 P.M.
