Sadie M. Gross
Sadie Motes Gross, 84, of Palatka, went to be with the Lord Monday,
June 14, 2010, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Jacksonville after a
brief illness.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Palatka. She was a member
of First Presbyterian Church of Palatka and the Women of the Church
group. She was also very active in her church Sunday school class.
Sadie was an active volunteer with the Bread of Life as well as the
American Cancer Society of Palatka, which was very dear to her
heart. She retired after 31 years as an executive secretary with the
Putnam County School System. Sadie was a 1944 graduate of Mellon
High School. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially working in her
yard, going camping and just sitting outside watching the
great-grandchildren play. Her family was the most important thing to
her and would do anything she could to help if someone needed her.
Sadie's life could be characterized by her devotion to her family
and friends, a lively spirit, and most of all her faith in the Lord.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Edward Gross
and four siblings, Emmett "Tubby" Motes, Carl Motes, Audie Motes and
Arline Motes Stockton.
She is survived by her two sons, Steve (Debbie) Gross of Palatka,
and Mark (Ressie P.) Gross of Melbourne; three grandchildren, Josh
Gross of Palatka, Jason (Jessica) of San Mateo, and Melissa
(Michael) Dempsey of Apopka; five great-grandchildren, Austin
Layman, Alyssa Gross, Farrin Gross, Addison and Alexandra Dempsey as
well as several nieces, nephews, and many special friends.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 17.
Services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, June 18, at the
Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka, with Pastor Bob Scott
officiating. In celebration of her life, a memorial video will be
shown. Burial will follow in Peniel Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center,
6400 St. Johns Avenue, Palatka, Florida 32177.
