Services for JANICE "WALTON" PARKER, who died at home in Durant, Oklahoma on Saturday, July 3, 2010 at the age of 78 will be held at 2:p.m., July 7, 2010 at Northwest Church of Christ, Durant, OK. Andy Burns, Minister of NW Church of Christ will officiate, assisted by Harold "Mickey" Davis.
Mrs. Parker was born October 6, 1931 in Liberty, OK to Leslie A. (Jack) and Bertie Walton. She married Charles David Parker October 6, 1950 in Durant, OK. She was a member of Northwest Church of Christ, Durant. She enjoyed working with hospital projects for children and other volunteer work. She was past member of Faculty Dames, Southeastern OK State University, member of National Educators Association, Oklahoma Retired Educators Association and Oklahoma Educator Association. She was a charter member and assisted with planning and organizing the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Retired Dinner Group and meetings.
Mrs. Parker received her Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and masters in education degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State University. She was certified as a Reading Specialist. She was recognized as Teacher of the Year, Durant & Bryan County, 1971, Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America, 1972, Teacher of the Year, Washington Irving Elementary School, 1987, and was cited for Academic honors in 1998 as Who's Who among American Teachers. She was honored to have been selected as Grand Marshall at the Durant High School Homecoming Parade in 1988.
After a teaching career of 32 years in Mead and Durant school systems, she retired in 1988, but remained active and interested in education. Her greatest joy was spending time and helping her children and grandchildren.
Mrs. Parker was preceded in death by her parents and sister Jola Russell. She is survived by her husband, Charles David Parker, son, David J. Parker and wife Paula, Sherman, TX, daughter, Cheryl Lynn May and husband Gerry, Shreveport, LA. Grandsons, Jeffrey Parker and wife April, The Colony, TX, Brian Parker, Sherman, TX and Travis May, Shreveport, LA. Great grand-daughter Presley Parker, The Colony, TX. Sisters, Lillian McAlister and husband Troy, Denison, TX, Nell Williams and husband Claud, Denison, TX and Barbara Mackey and husband Beryl, Sherman, TX.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, with pallbearers Gene Black, James Latham, Collin Bowen, Don Herron, George Anderson, Paul Wiley, Arnold Walker, and Neal Taylor. Holmes-Coffey-Murray Funeral home will handle arrangements.
