John Kenneth Christensen, 86, died on May 30, 2009 at Bickford Cottage in West Des Moines, IA. A Celebration of Kenneths life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 7, 2009 at Bickford Cottage, 5050 Hawthorne Dr., West Des Moines, IA.
Kenneth was born in Council Bluffs, IA on September 4, 1922, and was a resident there for most of his life until moving to West Des Moines in 2006. He served as a 1st Lt. in the US Army in Germany during WWII, and worked for the Union Pacific Railroad Headquarters in Omaha from 1947 until his retirement in 1982 as Public Projects and Contracts Engineer.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Elaine, their two children and their spouses, Kay and Dr. Ron Grooters of West Des Moines, IA, and Roger and Jeanne Christensen of Parker, CO and a sister, Phyllis Voldal of Deerwood, MD. Kenneth and Elaine have five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, all in West Des Moines and Parker.
Kenneth was a faithful member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church for is entire life. He met Elaine there in Sunday school and were choir members together when he was sixteen and she was fifteen. They were married there three years later on May 3, 1942 and lived a life together that was admired by all who were fortunate to know and love them as friends and family. Kenneth was a fifty-year member of Bluff City Masonic Lodge No. 71, the Scottish Rite, and Tangier Temple.
