Gerald O. Sterner
Gerald O. (Jerry) Sterner went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 25, 2009 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, after a courageous 2½ year battle with cancer.
Born August 25, 1935 in Mike, Missouri to Melinda Rosetta Bezoni and William O. Sterner. His childhood was spent in Redding, Iowa where he was an Eagle Scout and an outstanding basketball player, accompanying his team to the state tournament. He attended NW Missouri University and Drake University. Jerry was involved in business and finance throughout his career, working for Dial Finance, John Hancock then establishing his own business " Sterner and Associates.
On October 13, 1974 Jerry married Ann Lyons of Bedford, Iowa. They have resided in Ankeny since 1975.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Ann; children, Catherine Brown of Clarinda, IA, Kevin Champ of Clarinda, IA, Al Champ of Des Moines, IA, Angela Holland of Alleman, IA; nephew, Reece Barrett of Des Moines; grandchildren, Chris, Cliff, Jake, Kenny and Samantha; many nieces and nephews; and many wonderful neighbors and friends.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Delbert; and sister, Juanita Staats.
Jerry was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny. He volunteered as a one-to-one mentor at Ankeny High School and was involved in the VIP mentoring program in Des Moines, IA.
Jerry was cremated with a memorial service to be scheduled at a later date according to Jerry’s wishes.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Food Pantry of Ankeny or Mercy Hospice Johnston.
