Obituary:

Joe A. Apodaca, 83, a retired Las Vegas, NM postmaster and three time war veteran, passed away on Sunday at the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gregorio C. and Gregoria Lilly Allemand Apodaca; a brother, Augustine, and a niece Christina Apodaca. He is survived by four daughters: Gloria Apodaca and companion Raul Roybal of Albuquerque, NM, Grace Brewer and Gladys Apodaca both of Phoenix, AZ, and Glenda Kelley and husband John of New Port Richey, FL; two sisters, Martha Martinez of Pueblo, CO and Marie Edwards of Rockville, MD; two brothers, Greg Apodaca and wife Victoria of Las Vegas, NM and Leroy Apodaca and wife Diane of Taos, NM; four grandchildren: Avary Apodaca, Jason Apodaca, Misty Croak, and Sarah Croak; and by four great-grandchildren: Anthony, Sabrina, Serena, and Devan Apodaca. He was born in Chaperito, New Mexico on May 24, 1924. He received his education here in Las Vegas and joined the Army Air Corps during World War II and then re-enlisted in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict and in Vietnam.. His specialty was a structural engineer and was also a courier for the Department of Defense. When he came out of the service, he was a bartender at the El Fidel Hotel and then later on was the postmaster at New Mexico Highlands University for 15 years. A life long catholic, he was an active member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church. He was a member of the San Juan Argonne Post #1547 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Post 24, and B. P. O. Elks Lodge #408. Joe loved his family and especially his grandchildren and enjoyed playing bingo. He was a daily visitor to his mother's grave at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. All services will be held at Our Lady of Sorrows Church with a rosary on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial on Friday at 9:00 a.m. Father Patrick Duffy will celebrate the Mass. The interment will follow at 11:30 a.m. in the Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the New Mexico Highlands University Foundation, Box 9000, Las Vegas, NM 87701 for a scholarship.
