Herbert Gilbert

Herbert D. Gilbert, age 87, 516 Union Way, Erwin passed away on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at his residence. Mr. Gilbert was a lifelong resident of Erwin and a son of the late Earl A. and Ida Lewis Gilbert. He was a veteran of the Army Air Force during WWII. Mr. Gilbert served as Group Sgt. Major, 930th Engr Avn Gp under the command of Colonel Clarence T. Foust, C. E. He also served as First Sgt. with the local U. S. Army Reserve Unit under the command of Colonel Russell D. Brackins. Mr. Gilbert retired as a Mechanical Department Supervisor having been employed by CSX Corporation, formerly Clinchfield Railroad, for over thirty-six years. He was a member of Lily Dale Church of Christ where he served as a Deacon and Song Leader for many years. Mr. Gilbert was also the lead singer in the Lily Dale Quartet. He was a fifty-nine year member of Erwin Centennial Lodge #491 Free and Accepted Masons. Other than his parents he was preceded in death by five brothers: Jesse M., D. B., William T., Earl A., Jr., and Kenneth H. Gilbert. Mr. Gilbert leaves behind to cherish his memories his wife of sixty-five years, Ruth Riddle Gilbert; one son, Herbert Michael Gilbert of Scottsdale, AZ; one daughter, Teresa Droke and husband, Rik of Johnson City; two granddaughters: Natalie Gilbert of Scottsdale, AZ and Kimberly Gilbert of Knoxville; one niece, Joyce Smith of Jonesborough; four nephews: Bill, Jim, Joe and Chris Gilbert; one step-niece, Erlene Chapman of Tomkinsville, KY and special persons, Sally E. Betterton of GA. and Joseph Washington. The family will receive friends from 1:30 P. M. until the hour of service on Sunday, May 22, 2016 at the Robert Ledford Funeral Chapel. Reverend Kevin Laws will officiate at the 2:30 P. M. service. Music will be provided by Inez Chandler. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. Military Honors will be rendered by the Kingsport VFW Post 4933.
