Anastasia Kuhnle Obituary

Anastasia I. (Utaras) Kuhnle, 95, of Decatur, died on May 18 at Westminster Village Health Center in West Lafayette. She was the daughter of the late August and Veronica Utaras of Shenandoah, Pa. After high school graduation at the age of 16, she worked at a hosiery mill in Reading, Pa., until joining the US Army Air Corps at the age of 20. During World War II, she served in England, Germany and France as a cryptographer. She received WAAC Service and Good Conduct medals during her three years in the military. She met the late William J. Kuhnle Jr., of Decatur, during the war. According to French law, they were married in a civil ceremony by the mayor of Paris, on June 21, 1945, followed by a religious ceremony by a Catholic priest. Mr. Kuhnle died on May 29, 1990. Mrs. Kuhnle was preceded in death by five siblings. They included August Jr. who died as a child, and four sisters, Violet, Helen, Leona and Constance. Surviving are 6 sons, Michael of Fishers, Richard, Ronald and James (Brenda) of Decatur, Thomas (Sandy) of Zionsville and Patrick of West Lafayette. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 3 great, great grandchildren; as well as 6 nieces and nephews. In addition to tending to family, Mrs. Kuhnle enjoyed crocheting, bowling, reading, cooking and praying. Visitation will be from Noon-3:00 p.m. Sunday, May 22, 2016 at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home, 225 W. Adams St., Decatur, followed by a reciting of the Holy Rosary at 3:00 p.m. A Prayer Service will be held at 10:20 a.m. on Monday, May 23, 2016 at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, 414 W. Madison St., Decatur. Officiating will be Father David Voors. Interment will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery immediately following the Funeral Mass. The preferred memorial is St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church or to the charity of your choice.
