Mr. Giuseppe Catanzaro

Mr. Giuseppe Catanzaro, age 95 years, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Saturday, May 14, 2016. Giuseppe was born May 25, 1920 in Curinga, Italy to Elia and Felicia Catanzaro. He married the love of his life, Caterina Cantafio, on July 12, 1942. He immigrated to Canada in 1953 to pave the way for his family to follow in 1955. Giuseppe worked for Welch Railroad. He later worked as a labourer for Rino Zanette. He started and owned the Calabria Bar. Giuseppe was the President of the Italia and Juventus Soccer Clubs as well as the founder and President of the Calabria Soccer Club. He was the regular provider of the European soccer stats for the Sunday morning Italian radio programming “Vocce de Italia” announced by Mario Caccomo. He was also a very trustworthy man behind the scenes. Giuseppe helped organize many social and entertainment events to help fund various activities of the young soccer players and was one of the founders of the first Terry Fox Soccer Tournament to raise funds for cancer. Giuseppe was a proud life-time member of the Italian Society. Giuseppe will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his 9 children Felicia (Alfred) Urbanski, Elia Catanzaro, Concetta Catanzaro, Giovanna (George) Hamilton, Albano Catanzaro (Sherrille), Stella Catanzaro, Silvanna (Karl) Redmond, Carla (Doug) Rowe and Domenico (Connie) Catanzaro; 27 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; brothers Vincenzo (Giuseppina) Catanzaro and Giovanni (Nunziatina) Catanzaro, of Italy; sisters Giovanna (Sam) Augruso and Bettina Rocco, of Italy. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews in both Canada and Italy. Predeceased by his wife Caterina, his parents, Elia and Felicia Catanzaro, a twin brother, Elia, sisters Maria Concetta Lorusso, Felicia Grasso, brother Domenico and grandsons Shaun Goyan and Keith Joseph Catanzaro. Funeral services for the late Mr. Giuseppe Catanzaro will be held on Friday, May 20, 2016 with family and friends gathering in St. Andrew's R. C. Church, 292 Red River Road at Algoma, for the Funeral Mass at 9:30 am celebrated by Father Antoni Fujarczuk. Entombment to follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in the EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma, with Vigil Prayers offered at 7:00 pm. If friends so desire, donations to St. Andrew's R. C. Church Building Fund, the Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay or the Canadian Diabetes Association would be greatly appreciated.
