C Kemp Devereux Obituary

Charles Kemp Devereux, 90, of Berryville, VA, died May 4, 2016, at the Blue Ridge Hospice Inpatient Care Center, Winchester VA. Mr. Devereux was born in Baltimore, MD; and spent his childhood in Chevy Chase MD. He was the fourth of nine children of Joseph and Helen Devereux. Mr. Devereux was a graduate of Georgetown Preparatory School in North Bethesda, MD; and a graduate of Georgetown University, Washington, DC. He enlisted in the Navy's officer candidate training program during World War II, hoping to be a fighter pilot. But a heart condition resulted in an honorable medical discharge. In June of 1948, Mr. Devereux married Dolores Payette in Washington DC. Their early years were spent in Georgetown and Chevy Chase. Mr. Devereux began his career as a small businessman, the founder of Blairs TV, which had locations in Chevy Chase and Wheaton, MD; Alexandria, VA; Washington, D.C; and eventually, Bethesda MD. In 1964, he worked as an advance man for the Barry Goldwater for President campaign. As his family grew to include eight children, Mr. Devereux and his wife looked for property large enough to handle children, pets and horses. They bought Riverside Farm in Berryville, VA, in 1967. This was to be their home for nearly 50 years. He was active in thoroughbred racing and was a member of WV Thoroughbred Breeders Association. In 1987, Mr. Devereux sold his business and retired to be a fulltime farmer, breeder, father and grandfather. He was active in his faith and a daily communicant at the Holy Cross Abbey. Mr. Devereux is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dolores Payette Devereux; seven children: Charles Kemp Devereux Jr. of Winchester, VA; Dolores Devereux (Cookie) Trahan of Hutto TX; Diane Devereux Long, and husband, Larry Long, of Gaithersburg, MD; Kathleen Devereux of Purcellville, VA; Brooke Anthony (Tony) Devereux of Berryville, VA; Anne Marie Sempeles of Winchester; VA; and Claire Devereux Boyd, and husband Robert Boyd, of Winchester, VA; sixteen grandchildren; and 10 great granddaughters. Also surviving are four sisters: Anne Rogers Devereux, Agnes Blair, Virginia Sparrow and Patricia Crowley. He is preceded in death by a daughter, Joan Payette Devereux; two brothers: John Ryan Devereux III and Joseph S. Devereux; and two sisters, Helen Devereux Egan and Sibyl K. Devereux. The family wishes to thank the patient and thoughtful caregivers who provided in-home care for Mr. Devereux for numerous years. A Funeral Mass will be held at 2 pm on Monday, May 9, 2016 at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Berryville, VA. Reception will follow at Hobert parish hall. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: Holy Cross Abbey 901 Cool Spring Lane Berryville, VA; or NW Works 3085 Shawnee Drive, Winchester VA 22601.
