Margaret Workman Hill Obituary

Margaret Workman Hill passed away April 22, 2016 at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital in Hood River, Oregon. Margaret was born January 26, 1921 at her family home near Admire, Kansas. She was 95years old at the time of her passing. She was the ninth child of Lucy A. (Hill) and James Pendleton Hieronymus. She attended the local 1 room (Dist. 107) school, Admire High School (salutatorian) and received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Emporia State University, with a major in History and Government and minor in English. Margaret taught history for one year then went to Washington State where she worked for Alcoa at the Trentwood plant in Spokane, Washington. She returned to Kansas after WWII ended and worked for a short time for the State Board of Agriculture in Topeka, Kansas. Later she went back to Washington and worked at the Hanford Atomic Plant for contractor General Electric. Margaret met and married Kenneth Workman, a fellow Kansan on June 21, 1947 in Couer d’Alene, ID. They lived for several years in Kennewick, Washington, also at various times in Larned, Kansas, Longmont Colorado, Kirkland, Washington and finally spent 12 years in Conrad, Montana. When they separated, Margaret moved to Antelope, Oregon, as a single mother, with one son who was a freshman in college, one son who was a senior in high school and a daughter in the second grade. While living in Montana, Margaret helped manage a motel, spent several years working for J.C. Penny and then finally went back to teaching. Initially, she worked at a one-room school on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation and later at a rural school near Conrad, Montana. She also taught at the local school in Antelope, Oregon and in Kent, Oregon. Margaret married Phil Hill in 1969 and they had nearly 34 wonderful years together. Both were involved in and held every office available in the little town of Antelope, Oregon at one time or another. Margaret was mayor of Antelope when the area was invaded by the cult of Bagwhan Shree Rajneesh and the next five years were ones of much stress for her and Phil. That was when they purchased a fifth-wheel and started going to Arizona each winter….A practice they continued for many years. In 2005 Margaret moved to Hood River, Oregon after the passing of her beloved husband Phil. She remained in Hood River until her passing. Margaret is survived by her son, Scott Workman and daughter-in-law Suzanne from Hood River, OR and son Roger Hill from Chiang Mai, Thailand and by her daughter Mollie Ann Boyce, Son-in-law, Richard Boyce from Lynnwood, WA and two loving grandsons, Nicholas and wife Lindsay from Coeur d’Alene, ID and Patrick Boyce from Lynnwood, WA. She has many many nieces and nephews all of whom she loved very much. Margaret’s many friends and past students were always a source of joy to her. She will be greatly missed. Services are planned for Margaret 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 9th, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church (1501 Belmont Avenue, Hood River, Oregon). Rosary will be prayed preceding the service at 10:30 a.m. and graveside rites will follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery of The Dalles, Oregon.
