Richard Gaither “Dickie” Dick, 82, passed away on Friday, April 22, 2016, at the Winchester Medical Center. Dickie was born February 23, 1934, in Cumberland, Maryland, and was a lifelong resident of Frederick County. Involved in the golf industry for almost seventy years, he was very active in the community and a retired partner and general manager of Carper’s Valley Golf Club. Prior to Carper’s Valley Golf Club, he was General Manager of the Winchester County Club. A 1952 graduate of James Wood High School, Dickie was active in the James Wood Athletic Association and a member of the Athletic Association Hall of Fame. He was also involved in many civic organizations and local and state government, as well as golf and club management organizations, and was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church. Active in Democratic Party politics, he served in a number of positions at the state and local level, including Chairman of the Frederick County Democratic Party. In addition to operating the golf club, he had served as the Chairman of the Frederick County Board of Supervisors, Chairman of the Winchester-Frederick County Economic Development Commission, Vice-Chairman of the Frederick County Industrial Development Authority, Chairman of the Lord Fairfax Community College Foundation, Member of the State Board for Community Colleges, and Member of the Winchester-Frederick County Joint Judicial Center Committee, which led to the construction of the Judicial Center. Dickie was a recipient of the 2006 John O. Marsh Institute Public Service Award. Dickie is survived by his wife of 62 years, Donna Combs Dick; and three sons, Colonel Michael Edward Dick, USMC (Ret.); Thomas Aaron Dick and wife Alisa; and Timothy Jay Dick and wife Karen; grandchildren Lauren Andrews, Meredith Dick, Andrew Dick, and First Lieutenant Ryan Dick, USMC; six great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law Kathryn Dick; and sister Juanita Legge. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Winchester at 116 South Loudon Street, at 2pm on Thursday, April 28, 2016, with the Reverend Dr. Dan McCoig officiating. A reception will be held in the Fellowship Hall following the memorial service. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W Cork St, Unit 405, Winchester, VA 22601, www.brhospice.org, or the Free Medical Clinic, 301 North Cameron Street, Winchester, VA 22601, www.fmcwinchester.org.
