Obituary of Ronald G. Hartwell

Ronald Groff Hartwell, 83, of Hummelstown died Sunday, April 17, 2016, at the Hershey Medical Center.
Ron retired from AMP Incorporated as Associate Director, Corporate Design Assurance; was a former employee of The Hummelstown SUN, and the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, Akron, Ohio. He was a graduate of the Hummelstown High School, where he won the American Legion Award and the Danforth Foundation Award. He graduated from the Pennsylvania State University with a BS in Electrical Engineering.
Ron was a former President of the Lower Dauphin School Board; President of the Dauphin County Vocational Technical School Joint Board; and Vice President of the Capital Area Intermediate Unit Board of Directors. He was a former member of the Publicity Committee of Harrisburg Area Community College, and an AMP representative to the Advisory Group of the Harrisburg Math and Science Academy.
He served in the regular Army of the United States during the Korean War. He held several patents while working at AMP. He was a former volunteer/instructor for the American Management Association and a former driver for the Elder Express of Hummelstown.
Ron was a former member of the Hummelstown United Church of Christ for over 65 years, and served as an Elder, Deacon, Financial Secretary, Sunday School Superintendent, and Sunday School Teacher. He and his wife, Kathy, are members of Grace United Methodist Church, Hummelstown. He was former treasurer for Cub Pack 66, and he was a former member of Boy Scout Troop 66. He was a 61 year member of the American Legion, Post 265, Hummelstown; the Penn State Alumni Association; and was elected a Life Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.
Ron is survived by his beloved wife, Kathleen McMaster Hartwell; one step daughter Angela Higdon Berkery and husband, Tom, of Sandy, UT, one son, Jeffrey R. Hartwell and wife, Maria, of Seneca Falls, NY; one daughter, Susan Hartwell Hamlett and husband, Jim, of Henderson, NC; one sister, Lois Hartwell Stanley and husband, Gene, of Pittsburgh, PA; six grandchildren, Stephen Hamlett, Amanda Hamlett, Alexander Hartwell, Jacob Hartwell, Nicholas Hartwell, and Jared Hartwell.
Viewing will be Wednesday, April 20, 2016, from 6:00-8:00 pm at Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown. His funeral service will be held at Grace United Methodist Church, 433 E. Main Street, Hummelstown, at 10:00 am on Thursday, April 21, 2016, with visitation prior to his service from 9:00 -10:00 am. The Rev. John A. Schaefer, his pastor, will be officiating.
