Gilman Madore Obituary

Millinocket – On April 7, 2016, Gilman “Babe” Madore passed on to his reward for a lifetime of caring, compassion, duty, honor, and family to rejoin his beloved parents and siblings. Babe was the last surviving child of 13 children born to George and Alice Madore. Babe was born on December 17, 1923 in Millinocket. After an education cut short by the untimely deaths of his mother and father, Babe went on to serve his country in the United States Army in 1943. After completing basic training at Ft. Devens, Babe trained as a Cannoneer in Texas before joining the 734th Field Artillery Battalion, seeing combat in the African and European theatres of operation under General George Patton. Honorably discharged in 1946, Babe returned and met Patricia Mailman, the love of his life, whom he dated and later married. They were married for 46 years until Patt passed away in 1992. Babe and Patt traveled for 10 years while Babe worked alongside his brothers in the construction business all over New England and New York. Upon moving home to Millinocket, Babe worked as a millwright at Great Northern Paper until his retirement in 1988 at the age of 65. During his retirement, Babe served his community as a volunteer for many organizations such as the American Legion (life member), the VFW, life member, the Knights of Columbus as a Third Degree Knight, Meals For Me, where he was honored for 15 years of volunteering by the state of Maine, and many other deserving organizations. Babe was also the advisor to the local Sons of the American Legion, a group he referred to, with much love and respect, as “his boys”. Babe was a wonderful and loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, companion, and friend. He had a quick wit and a disarming smile. He often was heard saying he was every man’s friend and every woman was in love with him. He was always playing jokes, teasing, and pranking co workers and family. Babe was an accomplished athlete and a great dancer. After the death of his wife, Babe found love again, this time with Bernice “Bunny” Nickerson, who became his companion for his last 18 years. Babe was predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Patt Madore, his mother, Alice, and his father, George; twelve brothers and sisters, several brothers and sisters in law, many nieces and nephews, including one special nephew, Michael Smart, and several dear friends, including Armand Pelletier, Ken Jewers, and John Columbo. Babe is survived by his son, Michael A. Madore and his wife Kelly of Millinocket, four grandchildren and their spouses, Julie Hewke and her husband Jake of Millinocket, Mark Madore and his spouse Billy Hawkes of Bangor, Bonnie Lemaire and her husband Marc of Westbrook, and Kris Megno and his wife Darlene of Machias; four great grandchildren (with two more on the way!), Aidan and Lorelei Hewke, and Hanna.and Emma Megno; many nieces and nephews, including one special nephew, Curly Madore, and a dear friend and riding buddy, Roger Seamans. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 A.M. Saturday, April 16 at Christ the Divine Mercy Parish, St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, 19 Colby Street, Millinocket, with the Rev. Bruce Siket, pastor, presider, with a gathering to follow in the church hall afterward. All are welcome. Interment, with military honors, will take place Saturday, May 21st at 2 PM in the Millinocket Cemetery. Gifts in memory of Babe may be sent to the Katahdin Area Support Group, P.O. Box 374, Millinocket, ME 04462.
