Bernice Kochik

Bernice M. Kochik, 85, of Snow Shoe, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on Friday, April 1, 2016. She was born on September 15, 1930 to polish immigrant parents; Peter and Antonia Kularski Rogus. She was born at the family homestead in Clarence, one of eleven children. She attended the Clarence Elementary School and then graduated from Snow Shoe High School in 1949. While in high school and shortly thereafter, she worked at the Hosiery Mill in Snow Shoe to help support her family. On September 26, 1953, she married Ralph J. Kochik and exactly one year later, on September 26, 1954, she gave birth to their only child, a daughter, Georgina. Ralph passed away on June 9, 1988 Bernice retired from Penn State University on April 15, 1991 with 25 years of service. Bernice loved gardening and cooking, especially Polish ethnic dishes. She was a wonderful homemaker. She had a special love for pets, especially dogs. She had a great affection for her Shih Tzu, and fondly named her “Precious”. Bernice was a member of the Queen of Archangel Roman Catholic Parish Church in Clarence. She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society and St. Ann’s Lodge. From the time she was a young girl, she sang in the church choir and continued that through many years of adulthood. Bernice is survived by her daughter, Georgina M. Kochik of Pittsburgh, three sisters; Stella Jozefik of Snow Shoe, Genevieve Basalla of Milesburg, and Barbara Starcovic of Clarence. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. Along with her parents and husband, Bernice was preceded in death by her two brothers, Frank and Albert, and five sisters; Patricia Rogus, Pauline Rogus, Cecelia Jendrisak, Pauline Wagoner, and Elsie Caldana. Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 5, 2016 from 2-4 & 6-8pm with a rosary service at 7:45pm at the Daughenbaugh Funeral Home in Snow Shoe. Funeral Mass will be on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at 11am at the Queen of Archangel Roman Catholic Parish Church, in Clarence with Father Mark R. Reid officiating. Burial will follow at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Clarence. Georgina would like to thank the staff of the Mount Nittany Medical Center, Mount Nittany Physicians Group, Geisinger Physicians Group, Juniper Village at Brookline and the Snow Shoe EMS for the kind and compassionate care given to her mother. Arrangements have been entrusted to Daughenbaugh Funeral Home, 106 W. Sycamore St. Snow Shoe.
