Teresa "Tater" VanDyke Obituary

Mrs. Teresa Lynn “Tater” VanDyke, age 48, of Oakwood, Virginia, passed away Monday (February 1, 2016) in Durham, North Carolina following a long courageous battle with cancer. Born May 12, 1967 in Grundy, Virginia, she was the daughter of Ruth Smith of Rowe, Virginia and the late Arvel Lee Smith. A lifelong resident of the area, she was a 1985 graduate of Garden High School and was formally employed by Teleflex and Lear. Teresa enjoyed fishing and spending time with her family. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Kelly Dawn Smith and Janet Sue Tomblin; maternal grandparents, Jake and Gaye Helton; paternal grandparents, Johnson and Catherine Smith and her father-in-law, Willie “Bill” VanDyke. Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her husband of twenty-two years, Jimmy Dean VanDyke of the home; two brothers, David Smith and wife, Sherri of Rowe, Virginia and Marty Smith and Erika of Little Mountain, South Carolina; one sister, Sonia Fuller and husband, Randall of Rowe, Virginia; special nieces, Miranda, Marisa and Tiana; special nephews, David, Jr. and Brandon; great-nieces, Micarah and Chloe; great-nephews, Caleb, Isaac, Luke and Duane; mother-in-law, Verdie VanDyke; special friend, Liz Welch; several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, additional nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Friday with Rev. Tommy Dye and Rev. Leonard Meadows officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Virginia. Pallbearers will be David Smith, Jr., Jerry VanDyke, Randall Fuller, Christopher Cayton, Duane Harris, Derek VanDyke, Matthew VanDyke, Charlie VanDyke, Ray VanDyke, Allen VanDyke and Bruce VanDyke. The family will receive friends after 6 PM Thursday at the Honaker Funeral Home where an evening song service will be conducted at 7 PM. Online condolences may be made at www.honakerfuneralhome.net.
