Dalton Ruffner Obituary

Dalton “Lee” Ruffner, 69, of Winchester completed his earthly journey on Monday, January 25, 2016, at his residence. Born May 19, 1946, he was the son of the late David Lee and Geraldine Reedy Ruffner. Lee was a loving and devoted family man upon whom his life was centered. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Joyce Haines Ruffner, two sons, Lee Allen (Alicia) Ruffner and Brett V. Ruffner, and his three grandchildren who were the “apple of his eye”: Jeremy Dalton Ruffner, Leah Ruffner and Jordan Ruffner. He is also survived by his sister Carolyn Coates (Tim) of Richmond. Lee’s brother, Terry “Bucky” Ruffner predeceased him. Lee retired from the General Electric plant in 2003 and thereafter enjoyed many hours of enthusiastic fishing. When asked when to expect his return from a fishing excursion his response was always “dark thirty.” He loved maintaining his flower beds and doing small engine repairs. He was particularly fond of yard sales. Lee and his family were avid campers and he and his wife enjoyed many years of traveling together in their RV, realizing their dream by criss-crossing the country visiting many national parks along the way. Together they camped with family and very special friends, the Gollidays and Wilbers, creating many precious memories that will now sustain them as they grieve the loss of his love and companionship. He was well known in family and friend gatherings to add a special note of humor into the conversation with his one line quips which still bring smiles to our hearts. The tender side of this man was most often brought to the forefront by his interactions with children with whom he enjoyed special relationships through the years – they seemed to sense that deep down he was “just like them” and indeed he was. The Lord has blessed us beyond measure and even in our loss we express gratitude to the Lord Jesus and declare “the Lord is good, He has been good to us, and He has given us a wonderful life together.” Lee was a member of Calvary Church of the Brethren, the Winchester-Frederick County Conservation Club and the Izaak Walton League. Visitation for family and friends will be Sunday, January 31, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home, and the celebration of life service will be conducted on Monday, February 1, at 1:00 p.m. at Calvary Church of the Brethren, Front Royal Road, Winchester, VA. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Izaak Walton League, Box 2954, Winchester, Virginia, 22604 for the Trout Stocking Fund. A true fisherman knows when and where the fish are biting. He rises up early in the morning, plying the water for the Elusive catch, waiting in the stillness for a nibble. A slight twitch in the line, expertly he reels it in – A good fisherman knows a keeper when he sees one, He knows when to toss one back, And when to head for home.
