Mr. Claude B. Compton, age 95, of Council, Virginia, passed away Monday (January 18, 2016) in a Richlands, Virginia hospital. Born May 13, 1920 in Buchanan County, Virginia, he was a son of the late Walter Gray and Mary B. Smith Compton. A lifelong resident of the area, he had spent his early life running the family farm and later had become a very accomplished carpenter, owning and operating Compton Builders. A member of Corinth Baptist Church since August 4, 1940, he had been ordained as a deacon in 1954. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Compton, one brother, Ralph Compton, and one sister, Violet Ruth Compton. Survivors include one son, Roger Compton and wife, Sharon of Council; two daughters, Jeanie Fletcher and husband, Guy of Honaker and Rita McVey and husband, James “Mac” of Beckley, West Virginia; six grandchildren, Maressa Monk, Renita Hicks, Byron Cook, Ben Vanover, Alex Compton, and Olivia Compton; six great-grandchildren, Lance Monk, Michaela Monk, William Monk, Gavin Vanover, Benleigh Vanover, and Sophia Compton; three brothers, Curtis Compton and wife, Pauline of Council, Walter Compton, Jr. and wife, Ada of North Carolina, and Kenneth Compton and wife, Virginia of Council; sister-in-law, Margie Compton of Rosedale; several nieces, nephews, friends, and church family also survive. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Betty Lester, Nola Thomas, and Rosalie Hale. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Thursday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. Danny Breeding, Rev. Edward Tiller, and Rev. Vonley Pruitt officiating. Interment will follow in the Frank Smith Cemetery on Big A Mountain. Pallbearers will be Alex Compton, Ben Vanover, Byron Cook, Lance Monk, Mike Thompson, Randy Compton, Loman Sullivan, and Ethan Sullivan. Honorary pallbearers will be Men of Corinth Baptist Church.
