Obituary

It is with great sadness for the family, but with great joy for her that we announce the home going of Hilda A. (Carle) Tufankjian to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Tuesday Nov 10, 2015.

February 25, 1925 was a foggy day when she was born at the Carle family farm in Princeton, Maine. She was the 3rd of 4 children born to Peter C. and Villa Mae (Orcutt) Carle....the first 3 coming in rapid succession were known as “Shir-Pa-Hil” by family members.

Having skipped 8th grade, Hilda graduated at age 17 from Princeton High School as the class salutatorian. She attended U of M at Farmington for 2 years but left to marry Kendall Dunbar from Machias, a sailor she met on a bus ride and then wrote to until his return at the end of WWII. Their only child, Jacqueline, was born in 1946. Hilda spent her younger years as a stay at home mom, but in 1960 she graduated from U of M with a BA in Education. Hilda had taught a year provisionally in Winterport and then following a move to Augusta she began a 17 year career as an elementary school teacher at Williams School in Augusta.

“Mrs. T”, as she is affectionately known, was a born again Christian. She had a quiet, unassuming and positive outlook on life, saw only the good in people, and always put others first. She had been an active member of Penney Memorial United Baptist in Augusta, Litchfield Baptist in Litchfield, and now attended Community Church of the Open Door in Hampden. She enjoyed Bible studies, either teaching or participating. She was very knowledgeable and in her later years read the Bible cover to cover twice.

Hilda was frugal, having grown up on a farm during the depression. She was an accomplished seamstress, knitter and gardener earning many ribbons at the local fair for her quilts, canned goods and clothing. Her favorite activities included reading, the daily crossword puzzle, cross country skiing, berry picking, biking and weed pulling, for which there was always a need.

In 1970 Hilda married Martin Tufankjian from Arlington, Mass. They resided together on the Indiana Road in W. Gardiner until his passing in 2000. They were inseparable and adored each other. Hilda was instrumental in Marty's acceptance of Christ as his savior.

Hilda adored her siblings and always said that her parents were as close to perfect as could be. She loved her mother unquestionably and admired her father as a model of what a Christian man should be.

Hilda is survived by: her daughter Jacqueline and son-in-law Carlton Murch with whom she lived; her stepdaughter Karen Aharonian and her family of MA; her beloved granddaughters Amy Slater and husband Tom of RI, Laura Closson and husband Randy of W. Gardiner, and Melissa Libby and husband Dale of Old Town; great-grandchildren Joshua and wife Alyissa, Jennifer Litman and Tommy Slater of RI, Taylor and Kya Closson of W. Gardiner, and Jacob and wife Katie and Emily Potts of Bangor; her joy and amazement, her great-great-granddaughter, Lucy Marie Litman of RI; her siblings, Orcutt Carle and wife Carolyn of CT, Shirley Suneson of Texas, and Parks Carle of Kennebunk; her dear nieces and nephews, Linda and husband Russell, Janice and husband Allen of Texas, Peter and wife Pat of NJ, Gary and wife Renee, Sarah and husband Don, Ellen, Edward, and David of CT, Helen, Stephen and wife Kathy, and Karen and husband Steve of ME.

Hilda was predeceased by: her parents; husband Marty; brother-in-law Vic Suneson; sister-in-law Marilyn Carle; and niece Judy Suneson.

There will be a memorial celebration of Hilda's life on Sat, Nov 21, 2015 at 2:00 PM with refreshments following the service at the Community Church of the Open Door, Pastor Mark Fowler officiating.

In Hilda's memory, please choose to do an unexpected kindness to someone who cannot repay you. Gifts in her memory may be given to Community Church of the Open Door, PO Box 77, Hampden, ME 04444 or Litchfield Plains Baptist Church, 56 Plains Rd, Litchfield ME 04350. Interment will be at a later date in the Princeton, ME cemetery.

Grateful thanks go to her loving doctor, Kristin Thom, and her wonderful caregivers from Beacon Hospice, Noelle and Ann-Marie.
