Alma Evelyn Jones

Alma E. Jones, 95, died September 3, 2015 at Maine General Hospital in Augusta. She was born October 22, 1919 in Washington to Earl and Anna Fisher Grinnell. Alma grew up in Washington and graduated from Washington High School. She later attended business school in Portland. She traveled with her husband on many trips to New Hampshire when he worked as a trucker and logger. She worked for GTE Sylvania in Waldoboro for over 25 years as a quality control inspector. She was very active in the Farra-Ross VFW Auxiliary in Washington and the Soule Shuman VFW Auxiliary in Waldoboro. She served as the State President for the VFW and traveled all over the United States representing the state of Maine. She was a member of the “Gold Circle” of Ladies Auxiliary. She ran a food bank out of her home for 10 years. She volunteered for many years helping anyone she could that needed assistance. She volunteered at the VA Hospital in Togus, and the Maine Veterans Home where she volunteered over 9000 hours of her time. She was a recepient of the Jefferson Award for Volunteerism and the first recepient of the Spirit of America Award for her volunteer efforts. She was a member of the Gibbs Library, Grange, and Washington Historical Society. She served the town of Washington as its treasurer. She was honored to be the Grand Marshall of the Washington Town parade. She was predeceased by her parents; sisters, Myrtle Kirkpatrick and her husband Sid, Barbara Johnson and her husband Walter Johnson, Esther Dumont and her husband Raymond; Brother, Jim Grinnell; Nephew, Paul Dumont and by a sister-in-law, Lorraine Grinnell. She is survived by a daughter, Karen Boynton of Washington Son, George Jones and his wife Norene of Thomaston Brothers, Gordon Grinnell and his wife Jeanette of Washington Don Grinnell of Washington Sister-in-law, Elizabeth Grinnell of Washington Several grandchildren, great grand children, two great,great grandchildren, nieces,nephews and cousins. A graveside service to celebrate Alma’s life will be held 11 a.m. September 12, 2015 at the Levensaler Cemetery, Route 126, Washington with Pastor Tim Lewis officiating. A reception will follow at the Soule-Shuman V.F.W. in Waldoboro. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Alma’s memory made to made to a charity of your choice.
