Varina Laing Obituary

Varina Taylor Laing, 90 of Winchester, Virginia passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Wednesday, August 26th, 2015 at her home in Winchester. Varina was born February 4th, 1925 in Sea Level, NC, the second daughter of James and Edith Taylor. She married her beloved husband of 65 years Gordon L. Laing in Morehead City, NC on April 2, 1949. Gordon preceded her in death earlier this year on March 8th, 2015. Varina’s greatest passion in life was always her family, she lived to care for and nurture her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She will forever be remember by her family as a strong, caring, and compassionate mother who could be counted on regardless of what was needed. There were few household jobs that Varina couldn’t do well, from cooking and cleaning to painting and yard work - if she felt it needed done she did it. She was an incredible cook that enjoyed bringing her family together to share meals at her home. Her “Taylor Blood” gave her the determination and endless work ethic that she needed to raise 3 children while managing a household alone during Gordon’s multiple deployments with the Marine Corp. She will always be admired by her family as a very special woman whose will and determination cannot be matched. Varina enjoyed returning home to Sea Level, NC to visit her family whenever possible. She loved the community and the saltwater she grew up on. Varina is survived by sisters, Velma Seitter and Catherine Nelson and husband, Jerry; sons, Gordon Laing, Jr. and Michael Laing and wife, Jackie; daughter, Sandra Rush and husband, Bob; grandchildren, Matt Moffett, Nathan and Melissa Laing, Tiffany Laing, Josh Laing, Ashley Rush, Aaron Laing, and Natasha Ramey and great-grandchildren, Dylan, Nate, Ethan, Colton, Miranda, and Adrianna. She will be greatly missed by each, however she has left us all with a lifetime of wonderful memories. Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, James Taylor, Monroe Taylor and wife, Mildred, Graham Taylor and wife, Doris, Guy Taylor and wife, Ethel, and brother-in-law, John Seitter. A friends and family visitation will be held Sunday, August 30, 2015 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home, 228 S Pleasant Valley Rd., Winchester, VA 22601. A celebration service of Varina’s life will occur Monday, August 31, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at Jones Funeral Home followed by interment in Shenandoah Memorial Park.
